ARO FAQ

Below is a start of a faq for the ARO.  Whenever I get a question from an observer or other interested party, I will post it here along with, hopefully, the correct answer.

  1. Does the latest version of Unipops handle SMT data?  (04/24/06)
  2. Why can I not get any windows after starting Xremote? (06/06/06)

Q: Does the latest version of Unipops handle SMT data? (04/24/06)

A: Actually, yes Unipops can reduce SMT data. It's just you have to trick it. At the Line> prompt type: hcdata ( like your asking for 12 meter MAC data ) This will tell Unipops to look for data with the .11 and .12 scan numbers, which the new filter banks have. So, you can look at filter data, just not the AOS's yet. But, we are working on it.

Q. Why can I not get any windows after starting Xremote? (06/06/06)

A. We continue to receive reports of a few observers who are having problems using Xremote. We believe the biggest problem is that the observer is starting their ssh session into the telescope computers without turning on X11 tunneling. Be sure to add the '-X' switch to your invocation of ssh. Complete documentation on Remote Observing can be found here.

There may also be problems on your end with your fonts. The solution for fonts problems depends on what platform you are using.

For Fedora Linux: As root type the following: yum install xorg-x11-fonts-*

For Ubuntu Linux: As root type the following: apt-get install xfonts-*

For Windows users using Xming: You can find the source and fonts files here
